2011-2012 Season ~ Spirit of Grace and PeaceThroughout the National Lutheran Choir’s 26th concert season we will turn to African American spirituals for inspiration and musical absolution of our earthly troubles. Featured will be well known settings of spirituals and new works that are partners to this powerful tradition. The Choir will perform The Spheres, Dark Night of the Soul, and Agnus Dei by Norway’s treasured composer Ola Gjielo. New works by Craig Carnahan, William Beckstrand and Paul John Rudoi will be premiered. We will also explore portions of the Christian mass in new and unexpected combinations. Finally, with our partner artists, Cantus, we will sing without words from Rachmaninoff’s Vocalise to an improvisatory wordless song that will leave the audience enraptured. |

Credo: Spirit of Grace and PeaceSaturday, March 10, 2012 - 7:30pmThe theology of the African American spirituals tradition resonates in many ways - as if to shout: "God, save us!" Woven together with spirituals set by Moses Hogan, Craig Carnahan, Paul Weber and Joseph Jennings, choral treasures such as Mendelssohn's Psalm 2 (Warum toben die Heiden, "Why do the nations so furiously rage together?") and a monumental multi-movement work of Jean Berger, "Vision of Peace" create a sense of deep human yearning. Also included will be music of Gretchaninoff, Urmas Sisak, Charles Marie Widor and David Cherwien.

Sanctus: Spirit of Music (with Cantus)Saturday, May 5, 2012 - 7:30pmJoining the National Lutheran Choir will be nationally acclaimed choir Cantus for a program of music which moves the spirit with its power alone. Rachmaninoff's Vocalise has mystical power with an almost inexplicable effect and will be performed by the two groups combined. Movements of Rachmaninoff's All Night Vigil will also be performed, as well as music by Randall Thompson, Ralph Manuel, spiritual settings and a worldless vocal piece which will be almost entirely improvisatory. Experience this joining together of heaven and earth sparked by these two highly cherished yet "national" performing organizations.
